SPAIN + INDIA

Many of Flamenco roots are found in India. Andalusian Gypsies, whom originated from North West India and Pakistan, were eventual large contributors to Flamenco dance. They made the slow pilgrimage west, eventually settling in Southern Spain.

This migratory history explains one reason why Flamenco sets itself apart from most other European traditional dances. With this common origin, one can see many similarities between Flamenco and some Indian dances like Kathak.

Karen has made this deep connection between India and Flamenco one of the focuses of her work. She has studied, and performed in many festivals in India: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNeyNPmClfs)

With the Eastside’s tremendous Indian community, and Karen’s dedication to this special Spain-India bond, we felt this an opportunity that could not be passed up. Thus we will be presenting a Master Class lead by Karen, focused on the intersection of Flamenco with traditional Indian dance.

Everyone is welcome…Experienced or beginners, Flamenco or Indian dancers, and even just those that are curious. This is going to be 2.5 hours of an amazing collaboration.

Saturday 12-2:30pm

Master Class: $55

Our special guest for this class will be Chandrayee Bhattacharyya, one of the most accomplished khatak dancers in the Seattle area. She has been teaching for over 10 years here.
